Learning To Fly:  An Arm Balance Intensive

June 15, 2013      1:30-3:30pm

The Studio DC  - Dupont Circle

Join Christine as she breaks down arm balances into the essential component that will allow students to incorporate them into vinyasa sequences. Arm balances can be decoded into building blocks that are an integral part of our everyday practice. Strength is not as important as understanding these invaluable tools that will allow students to fly and flow.

Often intimidating, arm balances can be accessible by having a knowledge of the simple “building blocks.” The bandhas or locks allow the core to engage and bring balance as well as stabilization to the body. We will overview the bandhas (mula bandha and uddiyana bandha) as they are integral pieces to activating the strength that rests within each body in order to take flight.

Arm balances allow us to cultivate strong energy and add dynamism into sequences. They alert the nervous system and awaken chakras. Muscle engagement and energetic focal points vary depending on the pose. Aligning and working with this system establishes a strong base and releases a waterfall of benefits for the mind, body and spirit.

Included in the workshop will be arm balances such as Bakasana, Titibasana and Koundinyasana as well as integrated flow sequences. Find your confidence, strength and balance and come fly with us!

Cost: $30 unlimited yoga members

         $40 non-members

Free Community Classes  -  January/February 2013

January 5, 12, 19, 26 and February 2

10:30am - 12:00pm

Capitol Hill Presbyterian Church - 201 4th Street SE, Washington, DC 20003

All levels are welcome.  Come start the new year with some yoga, and see where it takes you!  In these classes we will be practicing vinyasa yoga with options for beginners all the way up to advanced yogis.  More than anything, we have fun and practice in a church annex with gorgeous stained glass windows, giving the weekend a healthy and energizing start.  Please bring a mat and water bottle.  I have a few extra mats – please just send me a quick email if you would like to use one for class so I can make to set one aside.  In this 90 minute time frame, I’ll take some time at the beginning to introduce a new pose or explore a topic, and we will finish with an extended savasana.  In other words, we won’t be practicing for 90 minutes straight, so don’t let that scare you away!  Feel free to bring friends, significant others, or someone that you would like introduce to yoga.  Contact me with any questions at christine.kontra@gmail.com.  I’ve enjoyed teaching these series of classes in 2012, and I’m looking forward to starting the new year with them again!

Moving Mindfully In To The New Year

January 20, 2013      2:00 - 4:00pm

The Studio DC  - Adams Morgan

Join us as we will honor and celebrate the new year transition with a joyful and mindful asana, meditation and intention setting practice.

Let go of 2012 and welcome 2013! In this workshop we will let go of tension and stress with a flowing vinyasa warm-up, release and shake off the past year with a vinyasa flow practice, followed by a contemplative deep rest and meditation.

This nourishing practice is sprinkled with poetry, self-reflection and moments for intention setting. A guided meditation will allow you to settle into deep stillness and to plant seeds for what you wish to cultivate in your life. Ending with tea, treats and connecting in joyful dancing fun, this workshop will "ring in" the New Year with the joy that comes from mindful movement, deep stillness and intention setting.

Participants are encouraged to bring pen & paper as there will be time to reflect on what has been experienced to extract the essence of last year as well as identify potential for growth and expansion. Please come prepared to move, breathe, slip into stillness, and move mindfully into the New Year.
